What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They are nocturnal, feeding at night and hiding in dry, dark, places during the day. While bed bug bites aren’t dangerous, they can be itchy and irritating, like mosquito bites. Some people are allergic to bed bug saliva, which can cause the bites to swell and become painful. Bed bugs typically live around 6-12 months, and over this time they could potentially lay upwards of 900 eggs.

How to tell if you have bed bugs

The most obvious sign of bed bugs is if you are waking up with clusters of bites on your body. Although it can be difficult to differentiate bug bites from other insect bites, this is often the first sign most people notice. You may also notice small, rusty looking spots on your sheets, which is bed bug excrement. Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown, and 5-6mm when unfed to almost 10mm when fully fed.
